The Daily Grind is officially open for business today Sept. 12. After a struggle to receive all the necessary furnishings for the cafe and complete all the final touches, the shipment finally came in late last week and a menu has been created.
Upon the arrival of the furniture, advanced interior design students rushed in Friday during class and began quickly putting it all together and arranging the chairs and tables in both an artistic and practical set-up. The coffee shop is occupied by four tables, all with clear seats called “ghost chairs”, with a mixture of other seating locations available. A rustic grey sofa sits in the middle of the cafe floor, with extra seats and a wavy wooden coffee table in front of it.
“I didn’t realize how interactive we would be able to be,” said advanced interior design student Mia Hanlon, who helped pick out the furniture and decide how the coffee shop would be set up.
Karlie Chamblee, a second interior design student who took part in the production of the shop, commented on how amazing it was to see her designs in actuality, saying she “never got the aspect of bringing it to life” until she saw everything laid out in The Daily Grind.
To further enhance the uniquely Timber Creek aspect of the coffee shop, artwork created by our very own art students adorns the walls. Additionally, the idea of students painting the clear chairs so as to add a splash of individuality to each of them is still in discussion.
The final decoration to mention is the moving logo hanging inside the cafe. Yearbook teacher Kathy Beers spent two weeks designing and building the logo that includes actual, moving gears to form the coffee shop’s name.
The esteemed menu includes lattes, cappuccinos, mocha lattes, hot chocolate, and caramel macchiatos, all offered with additional flavorings. An array of flavored teas and lemonades are available as well. One the highlighted beverages is the creatively named “Falcacinno”. As the term frappuccino is copyrighted by Starbucks, TC junior and culinary student Milo Light came up with the fun new name. Also offered are fruit cups, salads, muffins, juices, and other foods.
“Several students who don’t normally drink coffee loved it and would drink it from here,” said Culinary Arts teacher Sharetha Wheeler. The drinks on the menu have been tasted by all the culinary students, 95% of which said they loved their beverages. Prices are set around $2 – $3 and are payable only by cash or lunch code. Credit cards will not accepted.
With everything now in place, students may visit and purchase drinks from The Daily Grind from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. this opening week, with extended hours to be set in place at a future date. Students are encouraged to visit the coffee shop and relax with their fellow classmates in the rustic atmosphere of Timber Creek’s very own Daily Grind.
