Making history in the Falcon Theatre Department is senior Brooke Boyer, as she leads the first student directed main season play.
The show Boyer is directing, Our Town, runs Thursday, Sept. 26 through Saturday Sept. 28 at 7 p.m., and concludes with a matinee on Sunday, Sept. 29. at 2 p.m in the Black Box (FA116). Tickets will be sold at the door, and cost $5 for students, $10 for adults.
“We came to decide that Brooke should be the person that we ask [to direct] because of the incredible job that she and her directing partner did on the student directs in the spring that competed at the Keller ISD Play Fest,” director Lance Morse said. “Brooke is very well spoken, very mature, has an excellent artistic eye, so we wanted to bring her in as part of the directing team to share what she has with other students as well.”
Directors Craig Robertson and Morse asked Boyer to direct alongside them before fall show auditions in May of 2019. The pair of directors searched the school for Boyer, and had to wait to pitch the idea to her until she was out of AP testing.
“When Mr. Robertson and Mr. Morse asked me to do the show, it was a rollercoaster. Unbeknownst to me they were running around school to try and find me,” Boyer said. “They came running into my APUSH class, stopped my entire class, and asked to see me in the hall. I thought I was in trouble.”
In the hallway, Morse and Robertson asked Boyer if she’d like to direct Our Town as a fall black box show.
“I had the biggest smile on my face going back into class,” Boyer said.
Boyer also explained the significance of the choice of show Our Town as her show, as it was the first show Falcon Theatre had ever produced, as well as the fact that it’s fitting that it is the first main season show she gets to direct.
Thornton Wilder’s Our Town is a classic play about the fictional town of Grover’s Corners. It follows the lives, loves, marriages, and deaths of the people who lived in the town in the early 1900s, told primarily by the Stage Manager, and primarily focuses on the life of a young woman named Emily Webb.
