This year’s Video Music Awards (VMA’s) were held on Sept. 12, hosted by Doja Cat on MTV. The numerous outfits on the carpet however were nearly just as talked about as the awards. It may not be the Met Gala, but opinions can surface throughout the media judged off of initial presentation and execution. This years standards were even higher coming out of the pandemic.
Paris Hilton
Hilton’s go-to look has been glitter and sequins since the early 2000’s, that and the high pony it’s a wonder if this look is classic glam or just basic Hilton. However the silhouette was perfect and she definitely could bring back shoulder pads like a 90’s trend. While the look was definitely eye-catching it doesn’t scream up and coming, and more flash from the past meets high school dance. It’s a wonder if the star’s hit the end of her fashion peak or if she’ll wow us again someday… just not today.
Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Scott
The new couple the media’s been gushing about did not disappoint in their classic black outfits. Kardashian’s leather dress reinvented a flattering neckline that was sure to turn heads and Scott’s tux was well taken even with the tacky sunglasses. The look screams “It’s not a phase mom!” Overall the clean cut look wasn’t the most exciting, however if they were going for more of half finished Halloween costume it could’ve won best dressed, but not at my party.
Billie Eilish
Though the star has broken down fashion barriers, Eilish returned to her baggy carpet wear. Let’s be honest her clothes have been up and down in the media for years and this was definitely a low point. The clothes are practically screaming gothic librarian and I’m currently searching for where I lost my borrowed book. Is she bundling up to face the dreaded winter or to shush the VMA’s? Your guess is as good as mine.
Olivia Rodrigo
If there’s one person that we can expect a gorgeous, new take on style, outfit from its Olivia Rodrigo. The bright colors complement her skin tone and the overall dress is very fitting to her music and personality. Giving us very much 80’s prom with a twist vibes. The mermaid style is still breathtaking and it’s no wonder young girls everywhere are striving to take on her fashion sense as their own.
Lil Nas X
Yes. The singer stole the show with a Prince inspired look that had America gasping and begging for more. The head to toe continuous lavender color brought different medias together in a seamless way. The mix between femine and masculine clothing was top tier and luckily the stars were based off of their music because otherwise Nas would’ve stolen the show.
Camila Cabello
The new actress showed in a flattering pink and red corset dress. Honestly the gown it’s self didn’t need the bow but with her hit and miss fashion this was definitely a win. Even though it looks like she stole my grandmother’s old red curtains and paid the best designer to bippity boppity boo them into a dress it still looks gorgeous. It’s too bad she couldn’t have worn this in Cinderella.
Avril Lavigne
The pop princess of the 2000’s definitely back tracked… and not into the 90’s. Though we personally have nothing against plaid there are definitely some do’s and don’ts and while I may not have an example of a ‘do’ I definitely have one of a ‘don’t’. If plaid and LA glam met but in a ‘let’s bury and close the casket type way.’ Even the pieces separately are making me put my head in my hands. I never thought I’d recommend to someone to go with the basic hollywood black dress.
Dove Cameron
This is the VMA’s, not the Star Wars 87th movie premiere. I’m sorry but black and white movies have had more color than this and it’s not even the worst outfit seen that night. It’s just very unfortunately the wrong color. Like seriously. Any. Other. Color. She’s completely washed out like Cinderella’s dust rag before she met the fairy godmother.
Bella Poarch
This dress’s evil queen look is killer but is it really necessary? The Tik Tok star just got into music after having some viral videos, which seems like are just begging to be criticized. This is the VMA’s not the national Tik Tok award show. Pack up the mass amounts of fabrics and go back to just being on my For You Page. It’ll save me from having to write this.
Overall there were definitely some killer looks and some not-so-great ones but it was better than I expected. The highlights like Lil Nas X changing the fashion industry, and Camila Cabello finally putting forward a good luck were fun to watch. Perhaps next year they’ll surpass expectations even further.
