On Feb. 28, 2022, the Keller Police Department announced that they conducted a citywide investigation on local stores that sell vape and cannabidiol (CBD) products due to two Keller High School students experiencing medical emergencies related to Delta-8 gummies and THC vape pens.

The KPD conducted investigations on local vape and CBD shops on February 15. With the help of state police, KPD visited eight local shops with decoy juveniles. Of those eight, clerks at two of the shops were issued citations for selling without checking for identification. The state police also seized additional evidence of illegal products being sold at the two shops that received citations.

KPD stated that the medical emergencies the Keller High School students faced were extreme fatigue, blood pressure concern, and vomiting.

On Twitter, KPD reminds citizens that Texans must now be 21 or older to buy legal substances like tobacco. On Sept. 1, 2019, the Texas legislature passed Senate Bill 21, which increased the age requirement for the sale, distribution, possession, purchase, consumption or receipt of cigarettes, e-cigarettes or tobacco products from 18 to 21. The bill has exceptions with individuals who are at least 18 years of age and in the United States military forces or state military forces and can provide valid military identification at the time of purchase and individuals born on or before Aug. 31, 2001.

“Parents, caregivers, and everyone else who interacts with our teens on a regular basis: Please take the time to talk to the young adults in your life about these substances and their effects.”
